Does Tuning Void Your Car Warranty in Australia?
· 1 min read · PTEB Tuning
It's one of the first questions every owner of a newer car asks. The honest answer: tuning doesn't automatically cancel all of your rights, but it can give the manufacturer grounds to refuse claims for related parts.
Two kinds of protection
Australian buyers have consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law, which can't be signed away. Manufacturers also offer their own warranty, which has its own terms and conditions.
Where tuning matters
If a fault is caused by a modification — for example, an engine or gearbox failure linked to a tune — the manufacturer may refuse to cover it. Unrelated faults, like an infotainment or electrical issue, shouldn't be affected just because the car is tuned.
Modern ECUs can record when they've been reprogrammed, so assume a dealer can tell.
Making an informed decision
- Read your manufacturer's warranty terms on modifications.
- Consider waiting until the drivetrain warranty ends, or accept the risk knowingly.
- Choose a tuner who protects the hardware rather than chasing peak numbers.
- Keep records of the work done and your servicing.
