Ford Barra Turbo Tuning: Getting the Best From an Aussie Icon
· 1 min read · PTEB Tuning
The Barra turbo six in the Falcon XR6 Turbo, FPV F6 and Territory Turbo is one of Australia's most loved performance engines. Its strong bottom end makes it a favourite for big power — but most cars are now well over a decade old, and that changes the approach.
Start with a health check
Before any power goes in, age-related issues need ruling out: boost leaks, tired coil packs, worn intercooler hoses, and fuel system health. Fixing these first protects the engine and the result.
Common upgrade paths
- Stock turbo — calibration, intake and exhaust improvements.
- Fuel system — injectors and pump upgrades to support more boost or E85.
- Bigger turbo — where the Barra's strength really shows.
- Gearbox — the automatic and its calibration need to match the power.
Why custom matters on an older car
Every Barra has a different history. A custom calibration on the dyno adapts to the car in front of the tuner rather than assuming it's like new.
